Tone in Fashion Magazines
Tone in Fashion Magazines
Color and Typography
Color is important in the composition of a magazine because it establishes and reiterates tone in terms of theme, continuity, and mood.
For example, this issue of Vogue Italia is based off of the pop art movement, taking inspiration from famous an internationally-known, iconic painting of Marilyn Monroe by Andy Warhol. The issue is very heavy on vintage fashion and uses items from several decades ago, referencing the Golden Age of Hollywood. Therefore, these colors create a tone of nostalgia.
As an almost direct contrast of the colors on the first Vogue Italia cover, this issue has a more limited color palette; with white, grey, and black serving as the principal colors. This trio creates a serious, sophisticated tone.
However, the typography used on this cover, specifically the font used for "WONDER" infers that the issue is filled with people in clothes and articles that aren't neccesarily monotone. It's decreasing size and angle The use of a serif font with a san serif font also establishes balance on the cover. This contrast creates intrigue in the readers.
The Results of This Thought Process:
- I want to use fonts like that used for the "WONDER" in the second magazine cover for accents, because I think it will fit my ideal theme best and I could use the font in a few different colors to create some variety among my spreads.
-It would be paired with something serif and more streamlined like Merriweather or Playfair Display for the rest of the text.
- In terms of colors, I think it would be best to keep my cover text and logos to a black/white color scheme so that it stands out against any color scheme that I may have in mind because I want to use saturated colors.
- No more than three different fonts on a page.
